How To Feel Confident In What You Wear with Jacqui Miholos

“Fashion is a way to express yourself and your creativity… it’s not about following trends.”

Jacqui Miholos | Personal Stylist

An even bigger shout out to Jacqui for being so present through this interview. There’s a moment (you may notice) where I acknowledge her for stretching her comfort zone. BECAUSE we were in the botanic gardens surrounded by birds, and Jacqui has a bird phobia! YOU CAN HEAR HUNDREDS OF THEM IN THE BACKGROUND!!! I only realised just before, which we explore, and laugh off towards the end. Sorry, Jac and thank you for rocking the interview and photoshoot regardless!

“…whatever transformation someone’s gone through, I think feeling comfortable [in what you wear] makes you feel more confident.”

“My purpose is not for you to need me everytime you want to get dressed. It’s to teach you more about style so you can dress yourself, and go shopping on your own.”

SET Qs Summary

Is there any bad advice that you hear in the world of styling? [24:00]

People following trends because it’s not cost-effective, or individual, and fast fashion is a big issue at the moment.

Fast fashion being, fashion that lasts short periods of time (not “classic pieces”) or items that are unethically or unsustainably made.

I would definitely advocate buying less and buying things that are ethically made, and items that are going to last longer.

I think the movement towards slow fashion is one of the most important things in the industry at the moment.

What are some exciting things that are coming up for you? [28:00]

Heading to Sydney for fashion week, and lots of photo shoots coming up for editorial styling. I love meeting new people and connecting that way.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Lately, I’ve been looking up a lot of fashion history and the world. People of different eras, and women of different eras.

I must say, Audrey Hepburn is one of my biggest inspirations.

Obviously, she was a fashion icon, but she was such a massive humanitarian and always put other people first.

What are 1-3 books that have really influenced you?

My favourite book would be The Alchemist by Paulo Cohleo.

It made sense to me and it really aligned with me. It’s something I always come back to and every time I do, I pick up something new.

Another book that changed the course of my life when I was young (15) was this book about female entrepreneurs and it really inspired me. I think I just found what I want to do! It just made sense. The women in the book had similar values to me, and it made me understand why I was so different to a lot of my friends (at the time). It made me feel more secure in where I was heading.

What’s one crazy-but-true fact about you?

As we sit in the botanic gardens, Jess is now fully aware that I have quite the bird phobia!

From an incident when I was five, and it’s something I haven’t quite been able to get over.

What do you think makes a good health practitioner?

For me, it’s about listening to my own body. I’ve been to a lot of nutritionists and I’ve been told a lot of different things that I should be doing and that I shouldn’t, and I found that a lot of the time, it didn’t work for me.

No matter what, I start with a cup of hot water in the morning. I find it’s really good for digestion and it gives me that warmth.

If there is one piece of advice you could give someone struggling to love the skin they’re in, what would it be?

When I was young (not knowing what I was doing at the time) wrote down positive affirmations and say them to myself morning and night. Saying those kinds of things to yourself really helps, and makes you believe them.

Writing things down, saying them, meditating.

Looking after yourself as best you can, and on those days where you don’t eat “right”, or don’t feel great, don’t be too hard on yourself. Tomorrow is another day.
